Blog Post 3 #BlackLivesMatter
Assuming the young person I am talking to is at least 13 years old I would explain that The Black Lives Matter movement is to protect the lives of black people while trying to reach equality and justice. Other lives do matter of course but right now black lives are being targeted. Black people have been treated in an unjust manner because of the way the media portrays us and the way the system is set up against us. For example, if you have two houses side by side and one is on fire, which house will the firefighters pull up to and save? Firefighters should save the house on fire because the other house is fine. Black Lives Matter is to stand against policy brutality that targets black lives. Police should be held accountable when they commit murder.Right now this movement is for justice, and eventually peace.
But imagine getting in trouble for being a brunette, a blonde or red head. I'll take it a step further, imagine being killed being a brunette, blonde, or red head. You would be scared to walk freely in your own neighborhood let alone anywhere. Black people feel this all the time.
The movement may look scary on TV, it may look confusing but we are angry and we are tired of it. And we have the resources to express our emotions and stand up for ourselves.
Question:
Why is this a hard concept to understand?

Mission Statement of Montessori Community School of Rhode Island: Montessori Community School of RI is a socio-economically diverse school that inspires children to cultivate confidence, inner discipline, a love of learning, and a spirit of connectedness. We honor the uniqueness and innate goodness of each child, and empower him or her to develop skills at the periods of greatest readiness. Child by child, we nurture individual growth and build community within an environment that is adaptive, stimulating, challenging and supportive.
My Interpretation: MCSRI is for the children. The children come from different social and economic backgrounds and that is what makes us different! We inspire children though self love, inner motivation and feeling connected to the community they are in. We strive to cultivate individual growth and to have a community that is supportive.
Based on the mission vision statement I would love a kid friendly version to explain it in simpler terms to our children. However it can easily be explained to others. Something that was frustrating is that I wish more programs were like mine and its a shame all children can not experience something like this.

Non-Profits are organizations that people usually have a personal connection to. Many people don't see having a career in a non profit as a serious thing due to their lack of knowledge. Non Profits are tax exempted organizations by the IRS. Non profits receive donations from supporters and private donors. My experiences in non profits with the YMCA and my internship are that I grew really connected to my places and the workers. We were all there for one cause and abiding by one mission.
The four characteristics of Non Profits are
A Clear Mission Statement
Strong Communicators
Greater Flexibility
Qualified Staff Members
